eCube #4 is now online, with a proposed statement of principles for WisCon, "help wanted" adverts for concom vacancies, and great news about Nnedi Okorafor's new project.
Thank you for the clarification that you are in fact not interested in welcoming all feminists. I appreciate it: it lets me know that I am not welcome in advance, and that WisCon is not in fact interested in broad-based movement-building.These are important considerations that assist me in not purchasing membership.
For the record: not every feminist is interested in economic redistribution or "justice". Not every feminist agrees with "anti-imperialist" stances. There are feminists to left, right, and center, and I think it's a damn shame that you're giving up on two thirds of that.
"Feminism is many things to many people, but one way to describe it is as a belief in the social, political, and economic equality of all. Feminism is part of a larger constellation of movements seeking social, political and economic equality for all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, creed, ability, status, or belief."
I love the irony of a person proclaiming that WisCon is not interested in broad-based movement-building...because it allies itself to a feminism that ties itself to other social justice causes.
Wiscon is the world's leading feminist science fiction convention. WisCon encourages discussion and debate of ideas relating to feminism, gender, race and class. WisCon welcomes writers, editors and artists whose work explores these themes as well as their many fans. We have panel discussions, academic presentations, and readings as well as many other uncategorizable events. WisCon is primarily a book-oriented convention... with an irrepressible sense of humor.

Err. That statement on feminism fails to mention women completely. Is that on purpose?
Let me clarify. I mean this bit:
"Feminism is many things to many people, but one way to describe it is as a belief in the social, political, and economic equality of all. Feminism is part of a larger constellation of movements seeking social, political and economic equality for all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, creed, ability, status, or belief."
It doesn't have gender in it at all.
